Aims and scope

Journal of Fisheries and Ocean Science (JoFOS) has an international focus and provides a forum for the publication of high-quality scientific papers in the areas of fisheries and ocean sciences including biology, ecology, fishing technology, management, processing and post-harvest technology, economics, aquaculture. Both theoretical and practical papers are acceptable, including laboratory, field experimental studies and modelling relevant to fisheries and ocean sciences.

Article types

  1. Regular research papers (reporting the results of original research)
  2. Short communications
  3. Review and synthesis articles
  4. Opinions and viewpoints
  5. Methods and technical notes

Regular research papers should report the results of original research. The material should not have been previously published elsewhere, except in a preliminary form. Short communication is a brief and concise reporting of a research study. They should typically be less than 10 manuscript pages, including figures, tables and references.

Review and synthesis articles can be submitted on topics of current interest. They should generally be understandable to a wide range of audience (non-specialists) and provide an up-to-date compilation/synthesis of knowledge, outline research and knowledge gaps, and present future challenges, perspectives and research needs. The following paper is a useful resource for prospective authors intending to submit a review article to JoFOS.

Viewpoint and opinions (not more than 2000 words) provide an opportunity to offer a personal perspective on issues of interest. Methods and technical notes should be concise descriptions of experimental procedures (either laboratory or field based), novel techniques, or approaches of interest to fisheries and ocean sciences.

Peer review

The journal follows a double-blind (anonymized) review process. Each manuscript will initially be screened by our editorial team to determine suitability for publication in this journal, and only if found suitable, will it be forwarded to reviewers (minimum two) for assessment of its scientific merit and quality.

Open access

All articles accepted and published in the Journal of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (JoFoS) are fully Open Access: immediately free to read, download, and share. All articles are published under a Creative Commons license.

Ethics and policies

All authors must follow the highest levels of ethics while making a submission to JoFOS. The journal adhers to the ethical guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and follows COPE's recommendations to ensure integrity and transparency in publishing, including issues relating to authorship, conflicts of interest, and misconduct. When authors submit an article to JoFOS, it is implied that the work has not been published previously except in the form of a preprint, an abstract or a thesis, and also that the manuscript is not under consideration for publication elsewhere. All authors have to approve the submission, and all authors should have made substantial contributions to the manuscript. Authors must declare the use of (any) generative AI in the submitted manuscript.

General format for manuscript submission

Manuscript should be typed in MS word processing software (DOCX/DOC file) on A4 page, in Arial or Times New Roman font (point 12 with 1.5 line spacing).

The first page should contain the title, and Title and author affiliations (complete current/valid correspondence address and email address of all authors). Author for correspondence should be marked separately and an email ID provided.

For regular papers and short communications, the general format of introduction, materials and methods, results and discussion should be followed (results and discussion sections maybe combined together for short communications). An abstract of not more than 250 words highlighting key points including need for the study, objectives main methods, results and conclusion should be included for regular papers and short communications. Author(s) should use bold font for the following headings: Introduction, Materials and methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgments, Declarations, and References. Further subheadings in the Materials and methods section should be italicized. The abstract should be followed by a maximum of five keywords (that are different from the words in the title). Tables must be numbered consecutively with arabic numerals and submitted on separate pages from the text. All Tables must be submitted as editable text, not as images, and avoid vertical rules and shading within table cells. Figures, images, and artwork should be attached as separate files during the submission. All images must have a caption. Tables and figures should be accompanied by a brief title.

All references (in-text citation and list of references) should follow the APA style (see https://pitt.libguides.com/citationhelp/apa7). The list of References should only include works that are cited in-text and those that are already published, or accepted for publication.

All scientific names (genera/species) should be italicized. Common abbreviations and symbols such as μm, mm, cm, g, ºC (for Celsius), and % should be used. All measurements should be given in metric units. Ranges and spans should be connected by en dash (and not by a hyphen). A space should be left between any numerical value and a unit symbol (e.g. 10 mL, 30 mins), except for units % and ºC.
